I thought it would be a great idea to introduce my 4 1/2 year old son to the piano and begin easing him into learning how to play. Mr. Norman was the fourth teacher I contacted as the previous three wouldn’t even consider taking a child younger than seven. Mr. Norman, on the other hand, was excited about teaching a child so young and was bubbling over with ideas. I wasn’t sure how long that first lesson would last and was hoping for fifteen minutes of focus from my son; forty-five minutes later Mr. Norman and my son were still going strong. Mr. Norman carefully structures each lesson with a variety of activities that teach not just the fundamentals of piano, but an overall appreciation of music. My son is learning about rhythm, high and low notes, the keys on the piano, identifying notes, and proper posture. Another great plus is that Mr. Norman comes to our home–how nice not to have to deal with traffic and finding a parking place. His arrival is the highlight of my son’s day. I could not have asked for a better introduction to the piano for my son. He’s not only learning the fundamentals, but he’s having a blast doing it.

I’m one of those adults who took piano lessons as a child for a year or two, gave it up, and have always regretted it ever since. I wanted my son to start taking piano lessons this year, and then thought, “Why should he have all the fun?” When I asked Mr. Norman to become my child’s piano teacher, I also inquired as to whether he’d take on a very rusty, practically-a-beginner mother as well. Mr. Norman was delighted to have us both as students. Mr. Norman has covered areas of piano teaching that I didn’t even realize were important, such as posture, hand movement, and relaxation exercises. He has also taught me that playing the piano is much more than just hitting the right notes. He focuses on the essential thinking processes that are necessary for good piano playing. His approach is very thoughtful and specifically tailored to my skill level and interests. The only problem is that my son always insists on going first!
